This chunk of Chrysocolla comes to us from Arizona. It has a Mohs hardness of 2-4 and a chemical composition of (CuAl)2H2Si2O5(OH)4 nH2O. Often it is found within Quartz giving the mineral its strength. This copper-bearing gem dates back to at least 315 BCE when greek philosopher Theophrastus first wrote of it. The name comes from the Greek words chrysos meaning "gold", and kolla meaning "glue".
